first two lists of shorts and features are unabashedly weighted toward, though not
entirely restricted to, American animation prior to the mid-50s; the shorts
are dominated by Warner Bros., the features by Disney.
Why? The Disney features (especially Snow
White and Pinocchio) are distinguished by good stories with rich
relationships, fine characterizations, excellent animation. The Warner
Bros. shorts offer fully conceived characters with attitude (Bugs, Daffy, et al), innovative
synergy between music and story, and dialogue and action, all this
enhanced by near-perfect timing.
The television selections are characterized by their wit, satire and sharp
dialogue; the spare drawings and animation are clearly cartoon-like and
intelligent, focusing on sharp characterizations.
